Frenchcore is a subgenre of hardcore techno that originated in France in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It is known for its high energy and intense sound, typically performed at a fast tempo, usually between 180 and 220 beats per minute (BPM).

Definition and Characteristics

Key characteristics of Frenchcore include:

High Tempo: Faster than traditional hardcore, the tempo generally ranges from 180 to 220 BPM, and can sometimes reach up to 240 BPM.

Distorted Off-Beat Bassline/Kicks: It typically features a punchy, bouncy, and often heavily distorted 909 kick drum with an off-beat reverse bass, influenced by gabber, industrial hardcore, and hardtek.

Melodic Elements:

Modern Frenchcore often incorporates melodic parts, sometimes with a "euphoric" feel, to attract listeners from genres like hardstyle.

Samples:

Producers often use spoken-word vocal samples, frequently in French, sourced from films, video clips, or video games.

Performance Style:

While initially played via DJ sets and sound systems, modern Frenchcore performances often take place at major music festivals and sometimes feature live musicians alongside a DJ.

Notable Artists

The genre was notably coined by DJ Radium and popularized by artists who helped develop its modern, melodic sound.
