A TIME OF RENEWAL: CELEBRATING THE ORTHODOX EASTER!

Greetings, citizens of eDominacy! This weekend, a large part of our global community celebrates Orthodox Easter (Vaskrs/Paskha). Beyond the battles and political shifts in our game, this is a time of peace, family, and ancient traditions.
From the bells of the Balkans to the cathedrals of Eastern Europe, millions of people are gathering to celebrate the Feast of Feasts. In today’s special report, we take a break from the front lines to explore the colorful customs, the sacred rituals, and the unique ways this holiday is celebrated across the Orthodox world!

🥚 ORTHODOX EASTER CUSTOMS TRADITIONS

Orthodox Easter is rich with symbolism, and while each country has its own flavor, they all share a common spiritual foundation.

  • 🎨 The Art of Egg Dyeing:
The most famous tradition is dyeing boiled eggs. The first egg dyed must always be RED, symbolizing the blood of Christ and the joy of the resurrection. In many cultures, this first egg is kept in the house all year as a Home Protector (Čuvar-kuća).

  • 🙏 Holy Friday (Good Friday):
A day of strict fasting and mourning. No bells are rung, and no work is done. People visit churches to pass under the Plushchanitsa (an icon cloth representing the burial of Christ) for health and blessings.

  • 🕯️ Holy Saturday:
The day of quiet expectation. In Jerusalem, the Holy Fire is lit, and in many countries, people gather at midnight for a candlelight procession, carrying the Light of Life back to their homes.

  • 🎉 Easter Sunday:
The celebration begins! Families gather for a massive feast, breaking the long fast. The most popular activity is Egg Tapping (tucanje jajima)—the person whose egg remains unbroken is said to have the best luck for the year.

🗣️ HOW TO WISH A HAPPY EASTER IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES

In Orthodox tradition, the greeting is always a joyful proclamation:

  • Serbian: Hristos Vaskrse! – Response: Vaistinu Vaskrse!

  • Greek: Christos Anesti! – Response: Alithos Anesti!

  • Russian: Khristos Voskres! – Response: Voistinu Voskres!

  • Romanian: Hristos a Înviat! – Response: Adevărat a Înviat!

  • Bulgarian: Hristos Voskrese! – Response: Voistinu Voskrese!

  • 🇷🇺 Russia: The traditional Easter dessert is Paskha (a pyramid-shaped cheese cake) and Kulich (tall, sweet bread).

  • 🇷🇸 Serbia: It is customary to be forgiven by everyone you may have argued with before the holiday, starting the new season with a clean heart.

🌍 UNIQUE EASTER TRADITIONS ACROSS ORTHODOX NATIONS

While the core of the holiday is the same, each nation brings its own unique flavor to the celebration:

  • 🇷🇸 SERBIA (The Guardian Egg):
The first red-painted egg is called Čuvar-kuća (The Home Protector). It is kept throughout the entire year to protect the household from evil and bad luck until the next Easter.

  • 🇬🇷 GREECE (The Midnight Light):
At midnight on Saturday, all lights in the church are turned off. The priest brings out a single flame (the Holy Fire) and shares it with the congregation. Everyone carries their lit candles home, trying not to let the flame go out!

  • 🇷🇴 ROMANIA (The New Clothes):
It is a beautiful tradition for Romanians to wear entirely new clothes on Easter Sunday to symbolize the renewal of life and a clean start after the long fast.

  • 🇷🇺 RUSSIA (The Pyramid Cake):
Russians prepare a special dish called Paskha—a pyramid-shaped dessert made of cheese, symbolizing the tomb of Christ. It is traditionally decorated with the letters XB (Khristos Voskres).

  • 🇧🇬 BULGARIA (The Good Luck Fight):
In Bulgaria, the egg tapping contest is taken very seriously! The person with the strongest egg, called borak (the fighter), is predicted to be the most successful and healthiest member of the family that year.

  • 🇲🇪 MONTENEGRO 🇲🇰 NORTH MACEDONIA:
These nations share the beautiful tradition of massive family gatherings where the table is never empty. In Macedonia, it is common to take the red eggs to the graves of loved ones to share the joy of the resurrection with them.

  • 🇺🇦 UKRAINE (The Pysanka Art):
Ukraine is world-famous for Pysanky—eggs decorated with incredibly intricate wax-resist patterns. Each symbol and color used on the egg has a deep, ancient meaning, from eternity to harvest.

  • 🇬🇪 GEORGIA (The Red Graveyard Grass):
Georgians grow Jejili (vibrant green wheatgrass) on a plate and place their red eggs on top of it. It represents new life and the victory over death.

  • 🇨🇾 CYPRUS (The Giant Bonfire):
Young people in Cyprus villages build a massive bonfire called Lambradjia. They burn a small wooden effigy representing Judas, symbolizing the triumph of loyalty and faith.

  • 🇲🇩 MOLDOVA 🇧🇾 BELARUS:
In these countries, the Easter basket is a true work of art. People bring bread, eggs, salt, and meat to the church to be blessed by the priest in a beautiful morning ceremony.

🌍 EAST AFRICAN ORTHODOX TRADITIONS (ETHIOPIA ERITREA)

The Orthodox communities in Ethiopia and Eritrea (Tewahedo Church) celebrate Fasika (Easter) with ancient rituals that have remained unchanged for centuries:

  • ⏳ The 55-Day Fast:
While most Orthodox Christians fast for 40 or 48 days, Ethiopian and Eritrean believers follow a strict 55-day fast, during which they eat no animal products (meat, dairy, or eggs).

  • ⚪ The Sea of White:
On Easter Eve, thousands of people gather in churches for a service that lasts all night. Almost everyone wears the Netela—a traditional white hand-woven cotton garment. When the sun rises, the churches look like a sea of white, symbolizing purity and the light of the Resurrection.

  • 🍲 Doro Wat Feast:
The most iconic Easter dish is Doro Wat, a spicy chicken stew served with Injera (flatbread). Preparing this dish is a ritual in itself—it contains 12 pieces of chicken representing the 12 Apostles.

  • 🤝 Community Giving:
It is a deep tradition for families to slaughter a sheep or a goat and share the meat with their poorer neighbors, ensuring that no one in the community spends Easter Sunday with an empty table.

FAITH, FAMILY, AND FELLOWSHIP

Whether you are celebrating in a grand cathedral or simply enjoying a red egg with your family, Orthodox Easter reminds us of the power of hope and new beginnings. In a world—and a game—often filled with conflict, let us take this moment to appreciate our shared humanity and the traditions that unite us across borders.

To all our players celebrating this weekend: May your heart be filled with joy and your table with plenty!
