The tournament officially begins at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
- Opening Match: 🇲🇽 Mexico vs. 🇿🇦 South Africa
- Kick-off: 8:00 PM (Local Time)
- Historical Milestone: Estadio Azteca becomes the first stadium ever to host three World Cup opening ceremonies (1970, 1986, and 2026).
- Other Hosts: Canada and the USA will play their first matches the following day, June 12, in Toronto and Los Angeles, respectively.
🏆 Groups and Debutants
The 2026 edition is the largest in history, featuring a new format and fresh faces:
- Expanded Format: For the first time, 48 nations are participating. They are divided into 12 groups of 4.
- Newcomers (Debutants): Three countries are making their World Cup debut: Curaçao, Uzbekistan, and Jordan.
- The "Smallest" Record: Curaçao is now the smallest nation by population to ever reach a World Cup final tournament.
- Progression Rule: The top two teams from each group plus the 8 best third-placed teams will advance to the new Round of 32 knockout stage.
